Fianna Fáil MEP Barry Cowen has confirmed that he is recovering in the cardiac unit of St James’s Hospital in Dublin after experiencing a "health scare" over the weekend.

In a statement, Mr Cowen said he felt unwell in Strasbourg last week, with his symptoms persisting after he returned home to Ireland. He then attended the emergency department of Tullamore Hospital on Saturday, and was transferred to St James’s the following day.

Mr Cowen said he underwent a surgical procedure at the hospital on Monday.

He said he hopes to return home via Tullamore Hospital over the coming weekend and that he was "hugely indebted to the professionalism and compassion" of staff at both Tullamore and St James’s hospitals.

The Midlands–North-West MEP said his constituency office will remain "fully operational" during his recovery.

"I will continue my recovery at home and will remain in close contact with my team as I carry out my duties as MEP for Midlands–North-West," he said.

"My family and I are deeply grateful for all the kind messages and good wishes we have received — thank you sincerely."
