Gardaí are investigating whether an arson attack on a home in Waterford city that killed two adults and two young children is connected to a drug debt.
Two other young children remain in critical condition in hospital as surgeons try to treat their injuries.
The two adults who died in the fire have been named locally as Kim and Philip English.
The murder investigation team is examining information that Mr English had taken on a drug debt on behalf of someone close to him, and that this may be linked to the attack.
The person whose debt he took on lives elsewhere and has no connection with the family home in the Birchwood housing estate.
The attack happened at around 5am on Tuesday morning, engulfing the house while all the occupants were asleep.
Gardaí are satisfied that a “third party” started the fire that caused the deaths. It is not yet clear whether this assessment is based on witness statements, house cameras or both.
