An investigation is under way after a break-in at St Anne's church in Cork city at the weekend.

A statement posted to social media today said there had been a break-in overnight and as a result, the tower would be closed after its 10.15am service.

It is understood that damage was caused to the donation box.

Gardaí said they had received a report of a burglary at a church in Cork City that took place at around 1.20am on Sunday.

Gardaí said that investigations were ongoing.

The 18th-century Anglican church, located in Shandon, features five stained-glass windows and a stone baptismal font from a church that stood at the site before it was destroyed during the Siege of Cork in 1690.

The custodians of the church have been contacted for comment.
