Limerick school launches fundraiser to create new sensory room for pupils

The school received €16,000 from the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal but needs a further €12,000 to fully equip the new space

Murroe NS teacher Patricia Griffin, who is spearheading the fundraiser, said “every child deserves to feel safe, understood, included and ready to learn”.

After the project received €16,000 from the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal to cover the cost of purchasing the wooden structure, the school has now launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the remaining €12,000 needed for the outdoor space.

“We have an exciting dream for our school — to create a fantastic, fully equipped sensory room that will provide a safe, calming and supportive space for our pupils and our wider school community,” said Ms Griffin.

Specialist sensory equipment 

The funds raised will help equip the sensory room with specialist sensory resources, lighting, interactive equipment and calming areas.

Ms Griffin said the space will not only be for pupils, but also serve as a resource for teachers and SNAs, as well as parents and families.

“By helping us create this sensory room, you are helping us build a space where children can take a breath when things become overwhelming, find their calm, develop confidence and return to their learning feeling supported. Every donation will make a difference,” added Ms Griffin.

So far, students and staff have raised more than €5,000 for their project.
