Cork's Carr's Hill reopens following installation of temporary bridge

A section of the N28 between Rochestown and Carr's Hill has this morning been reopened following its closure to facilitate works for the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway project.  

The area had been closed off to motorists from Friday evening to allow the installation of a temporary bridge at Maryborough Hill. 

The existing overbridge will be demolished and replaced with a new structure. 

The road reopened to traffic from 5am this morning. 

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Fine Gael Cork county councillor Úna McCarthy said that although works resulted in traffic delays for motorists, the longer term benefits of the project will be clear once the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway project is completed.

“It was obviously short term disruption. But it was needed because it is a key stage really in the whole delivery of the project,” said Ms McCarthy.

The installation of the temporary bridge is the latest in key construction works to facilitate the M28 project, which has been described as a "nationally significant infrastructure project".

The €456m funding covers two linked schemes - the 11km mainline motorway from the N40 Bloomfield Interchange to Barnahely and the 1.5km Ringaskiddy Relief Road.

It is due to be completed by summer 2028 and will directly support the Port of Cork's relocation of port activities from Tivoli.

The project is aimed at easing congestion, improving safety and strengthening Cork’s role in European trade and logistics.
