Cork gardaí seize e-scooter capable of 87km/h from 14-year-old

Officers say ongoing enforcement has also led to the seizure of scramblers as they target dangerous use of powered vehicles

Gardaí in Cork have appealed to parents and guardians to consider the risks associated with high-powered e-scooters after an e-scooter was seized from a 14-year-old this week.

When tested at Gurranabraher Garda Station, the e-scooter was found to be capable of reaching 87km/h under test conditions.

"At these speeds, the potential for serious injury or loss of life is significant, particularly where young people are involved," said a Garda spokesperson.

The appeal comes as gardaí in Cork continue to target the dangerous and illegal use of personal powered transporters (PPTs).

This week, gardaí seized a number of scramblers and e-scooters as part of ongoing enforcement operations aimed at keeping roads and communities safe.

"We are appealing to parents and guardians to carefully consider the risks before allowing children to use powered vehicles. High-powered e-scooters and scramblers are not toys and are not suitable for use by children. Parents and guardians should also be aware that allowing children to use these vehicles can place them and other road users at serious risk," said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that gardaí would continue to take enforcement action where powered vehicles are used dangerously or unlawfully.
