Family-run stores to close in Limerick and Clare after decades in business

Central Shoes has announced the closure of its shops in Limerick city and Kilrush as owners Niamh and Dion prepare to pursue a new business venture after more than 20 years trading

Two long-established family-run shoe shops in LimerickLimerick and Clare are set to close after decades in business.

Central Shoes, which operates stores on Bedford Row in Limerick city and in Kilrush, Co Clare, has confirmed it will shut both outlets as its owners prepare to pursue a new business venture.

The Kilrush store has traded for more than 30 years, while the Limerick outlet has been in business for almost two decades.

Owners Niamh Whelan and Dion Zerafa announced the decision to customers this week.

"This choice was not made lightly, but as business owners we have reached a point where we are ready to embrace a new challenge and pivot toward a fresh venture," they said.

"While it's not an easy decision, we're incredibly grateful for the support we've received from our wonderful customers over the years."

A clearance sale is under way at both stores ahead of their closure.

The announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about the retail sector in Limerick city. According to a GeoDirectory Commercial Buildings report, Limerick recorded the highest commercial vacancy rate in Munster at the end of last year.

Almost 20 businesses have closed in Limerick city over the past year.
