Gardaí investigate Cork assault leaving man critically injured in Mayfield

Man in his 30s remains in critical condition after early-morning assault in Mayfield as gardaí seek witnesses

Gardaí in Cork are appealing for witnesses after a serious assault in the early hours of Tuesday morning left a man in critical condition in hospital.

The incident occurred shortly after 3am in Liffey Park, Mayfield.

]Gardaí on active patrol discovered a man in his early 30s who had suffered serious injuries. He was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he remained in critical condition on Tuesday night.

The scene has been preserved for forensic and technical examination.

A garda spokesperson said investigations were ongoing.

Local Labour Party councillor John Maher said there was an air of shock in the area following the incident.

“People are fearful and worried, and while I would commend An Garda Síochána for their prompt actions in this distressing case, I do think that it may be time to look again at the way our city is policed,” he said.

“The new high-visibility policing initiative which was launched in the city centre last year has undoubtedly been a great success, but I think there is a strong case to be made for a greater visibility and a stronger garda presence in the rest of the city.

“I also think there is also a need for a greater emphasis on community policing, which is a proven model which has been a huge success for gardaí."

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Liffey Park area during the early hours of Tuesday, May 5, and who may have camera footage — including dash-cam footage — is asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
