Gardaí close road after deadly collision outside Waterford

A man and woman who were travelling in a car which collided with a van outside of Waterford city have died.

They were both aged in their 40s.

Their remains have been removed to University Hospital Waterford where post-mortem examinations will take place in due course. The coroner has been notified.

Two occupants of the van were also injured but not seriously. They were both taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment. 

Both of the injured, a man (50s) and a juvenile male, suffered non-life threatening injuries

Post mortem examinations will be carried out on the remains of the two people who died, at the morgue at UHW.

Tramore and Waterford City West Sinn Féin councillor Jim Griffin said he was on his way home from Splashworld with his grandchildren when he met emergency services responding to the collision.

He said: “My thoughts are with the families involved.” 

A garda statement said: “Garda Forensic Collision Investigators have completed a technical examination of the scene and the road has been reopened.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

"Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 11.45am and 12.15pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Tramore Garda Station on (051) 391620, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

"Investigations are ongoing."
