A man has been arrested for assaulting a woman during a suspected hostage situation at a residence in Limerick.

The incident occurred at a house in the Garryowen area on Monday evening.

Gardaí and emergency services were on the scene of the incident for a number of hours. 

It is understood the man was holding the woman hostage while armed with a knife.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that a woman, aged in her 40s, received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

A man in his 30s was arrested and conveyed to a Garda Station in Limerick City and was being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Investigations are ongoing.
