For the second time in two months, Cork City motorists faced heavy traffic build-up in the city due to widespread traffic light outages.

Cork City Council says it has resolved a network fault which saw traffic lights at 76 junctions around the city fail on Friday morning.

The outages were first flagged with the council at 11am. Council engineers and traffic crews then began work to bring the lights back online in a phased manner, with major intersections addressed first, and smaller junctions tackled thereafter.

The council says all affected lights were restored just after midday.

A similar network fault, which caused major traffic backlogs around Cork and its suburbs, occurred on September 8, causing chaos for Cork commuters.

A council spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that "steps are being taken to minimise the risk of a reoccurrence".

As the traffic build-up caused by Friday morning's outages eases, the council says motorists should expect delays in certain areas of the city, and to drive with caution.

"Crews continue to monitor the network and various junctions," the spokesperson added.

"Cork City Council would like to apologise for the disruption caused."
