Two modular homes have been installed in Limerick City to showcase what the "delivery of affordable" housing could look like.
The two prototypes were installed on Monday night at Arthurâs Quay Park, showcasing two modular units for public viewing.
The concept is part of Limerickâs smart housing initiative, which is a key element of Limerick mayor John Moranâs mayoral programme.
The project aims to accelerate the delivery of affordable, high-quality rental homes for workers and individuals who are âfinding difficulty accessing the private rental marketâ.
The units erected at Arthurâs Quay Park will highlight the âpotentialâ in delivering durable and safe builds quickly.
Earlier this year, Mr Moran revealed the spending priorities for his âŹ10.5m mayoral fund, including a focus on making homes "smart", and preparing for a Ryder Cup influx.
During his mayoral campaign, Mr Moran was described as the man with âthe housing planâ.
One of his key priorities is to provide modular housing to meet the growing demand and explore more affordable solutions.
For these smart homes, some âŹ1.3m had been allocated with work âbeing prioritised to find solutions for rapid delivery on State lands and to secure the relevant national government approvalsâ.
The mayor had revealed his office is assessing whether 17 sites of publicly owned lands in Limerick City could provide for these modular homes.
However, there has been some strong opposition from local residents at the Boro Park in Janesboro â which was identified as one of the sites.
Despite the backlash, it is understood Mr Moran has refused to remove any sites from the list of areas deemed suitable for the smart housing initiative.
The exhibition of the modular units will be open on Friday, September 5.
