The Aqua Dome in Tralee has been temporarily closed for safety reasons following the discovery of damage to its well-recognised dome structure.

The indoor water park will remain closed until further notice while engineers and experts assess the damage and undertake remedial works.

A popular destination with holidaymakers, summer camps and school tours, the water park closed on Tuesday following the discovery, which was identified during routine maintenance checks.

As a precautionary measure, evacuation of the pool and facility was carried out “swiftly and safely” to ensure the safety of all patrons, it said in a statement.

The Aqua Dome will remain closed until further notice while the damage is fully assessed and necessary repairs are undertaken.

Aqua Dome chair Brian Durran said he sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by the unexpected closure.

“The safety of our visitors and staff is our absolute priority," he said.

“We are working closely with engineers and structural experts to assess the extent of the damage and to plan the required remedial works.”

He added: “We hope to reopen the Aqua Dome as soon as it is safe to do so and will keep the public informed of any developments.”

Late last year, the Aqua Dome closed for seven weeks to allow for an €850,000 refurbishment of its water filtration system.
