GardaĂ­ have launched an investigation into a suspected arson attack at a former pub in West Cork that left two men hospitalised.

Emergency services responded to a fire at the old Morris Arms pub in Connonagh, near Leap, at around 8.30pm on Wednesday. 

The building, which has been disused for several years, was significantly damaged in the blaze.

Two men, both aged in their 40s, were taken to Cork University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

GardaĂ­ have confirmed the fire is being treated as a case of criminal damage and a technical examination of the scene is under way.

Former Fine Gael county councillor Adrian Healy, who lives in Leap, said the pub has been closed for around 10 years. It is two miles east of the village on a bad bend on the N71.

A statement from gardaí said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of an incident of criminal damage by fire that occurred in Leap, Co. Cork on Wednesday 28th May 2025 at approximately 8:30 pm.

“Two men in their 40s were conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

“A technical examination of the scene is being carried out."

GardaĂ­ say investigations are ongoing.
