Gardaí have now confirmed that human remains found in Kerry are those of Michael Gaine who has been missing since March.

On Sunday evening, An Garda Siochana said: “Human remains found at farmland at Carrig East, Kenmare have been identified as being the remains of Michael Gaine.” A spokesman also said Gardaí are continuing to appeal to the public for their assistance with this investigation.

The investigation team can be contacted at Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.

The public can also speak with any member of the gardaí.

Mike Gaine, 56, was last seen in Whyte’s Centra shop on the Killarney Road in Kenmare on the morning of March 20.

On Friday May 16, human tissue was discovered in slurry that a relative of Mr Gaine was spreading. Further searches uncovered more tissue and bone.

The discovery came eight weeks to the day after he was reported missing.

He is believed to have driven from Whyte’s Centra shop, either directly or indirectly, out the N71 to his farm a few miles outside the town.

The following day his wife Janice reported him missing.

Last Sunday, a man aged in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of Mr Gaine’s murder.

This man was released without charge on Monday night.
