A man in his 50s has died following a single-vehicle crash in West Cork in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The man sustained fatal injuries when the car he was driving collided with a wall on the N71 in Clonakilty town at about 12.15am.

The man, 55, who was the sole occupant of the car involved, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has since been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital, where an autopsy will take place in due course. No other injuries were reported.

The N71 remains closed on Tuesday morning to facilitate a technical examination of the scene by Garda forensic collision investigators, and local diversions have been put in place.

In a statement, Cork County Council said eastbound traffic can travel through Clonakilty as normal, while westbound traffic continues to be diverted at Ballinascarthy.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to this morning's crash.

Any road users with camera footage who were travelling in the area between midnight and 12.30am on Tuesday morning have been asked to make this footage available.
