Hundreds pay tribute to ‘unbelievable’ Jon Kenny
Jon Kenny who died at the weekend at the age of 66.
Hundreds of people have paid their respect to beloved comedian Jon Kenny, whose funeral is due to take place today.
Surrounded by his wife, Margy and children Aran and Laya, Jon Kenny died on Friday evening in University Hospital Galway at the age of 66.
He was best known as one half of d’Unbelievables with Pat Shortt, and for his roles in , , and more recently, .
His funeral is taking place at noon on Tuesday at St Patrick’s Church, Lough Gur.
In 2000, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Last March, he announced that his cancer had returned, and that he was undergoing treatment.
Since news of his death broke, tributes have been pouring in from fans who described Kenny as an ‘icon of Irish comedy’ who ‘brightened the lives’ of so many.
One fan from Thurles wrote: “He will always be an icon of Irish comedy and entertainment, having enriched all our lives with and by his presence. Even through illness he was a beacon of hope for many.
"Though sadly gone to his eternal reward, his light and laughter will continue to illuminate for decades to come. God bless you and keep you Jon, and comfort your family now and in the days, weeks and months ahead.”
Kenny’s comedic partner, Pat Shortt, also paid tribute to his friend.
Sharing a video clip of him and Kenny, he wrote:
"I was lucky enough to spend so many years touring with Jon and learning from him.
"Creating some great shows and videos. Hilarious hours in the rehearsal room and playing great tunes. But sitting in the kitchen with Margy and Caroline just having the craic in Lough Gur will never be forgotten. Thanks Jon.”
