Gardaí have launched a major investigation into the double assault and are trying to establish a motive for the attack. They are understood to be following a number of lines of enquiry.

A man suffered multiple slash wounds to his head and arms and his partner was held down, beaten and made to watch his assault during a savage and sustained gang attack in Cork.

Senior gardaí have described as “significant and brutal” the level of physical violence inflicted on the pair by two masked suspects — one of whom was armed with a heavy-bladed weapon, and the other with a hurley.
