Former Green councillor Liam Quaide to run for Social Democrats in next general election
Formerly a member of the Green Party, Liam Quaide, who lives in Midleton with his wife and two children, was first elected to represent Midleton at the 2019 local elections.
Local councillor for Midleton Liam Quaide has been selected by the Social Democrats as their candidate for the Cork East constituency in the coming general election.
Mr Quaide was selected following an event in the town, chaired by his fellow councillor Ann Bambury and the party’s Cork East branch chair Rebecca Ryan.
The candidate, a clinical psychologist, said that his tenure as councillor has taught him “that the most important quality a public representative can have is determination to see an issue through, and to not give up despite the feeling of being ground down by bureaucratic barriers or sheer institutional resistance”, adding that he hopes “to bring that quality to the Oireachtas”.

One of the leaders of the successful Save Owenacurra campaign dedicated to reverse the HSE’s decision to close the long-term residential mental health facility in the town, Mr Quaide resigned from the Greens in April 2023, citing frustration with the party’s ministers over the Owenacurra closure.

Having joined the Social Democrats following a period as an independent, Mr Quaide was re-elected to his council seat at the recent local elections.
“We now have a local party group with serious energy and commitment,” he said. “We should never get carried away with confidence in politics. However, I believe we will have a strong change of aDail seat in Cork East through a sustained, collective effort.”
His party leader and fellow Cork representative Holly Cairns described Mr Quaide as “a dedicated and hard-working public representative who has been a strong voice for the people of Cork East on Cork County Council on a range of issues — with a focus on housing, healthcare and our environment”.
“I know that Liam shares the party’s vision for vastly improved public services, a properly functioning health service, a sustainable environment and housing that is genuinely affordable,” she said.
