Man, 40s, dies following suspected assault in Kerry

A man in his 40s has died following a suspected assault in Co Kerry in the early hours of Friday morning. 

At approximately 12.30am, gardaí and emergency services received a report of an unresponsive man found with serious injuries outside a residence at An Caislean Mor in Castleisland.

The man, aged in his 40s, was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. 

A man in his 40s has since been arrested in relation to the incident. He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in Co Kerry.

It is understood the parties are known to each other. Local councillor Charlie Farrelly said it is a terrible tragedy for the community.

The offices of the State Pathologist have been informed and an autopsy on the victim will take place later today.
