Met Éireann has issued a status yellow rainfall warning for just Cork this afteroon.

Currently in affect, the alert will remain in place until at least 9pm on Saturday evening.

The forecaster says rain will be persistent and very heavy at times, while motorists should be on the look out for some local spot flooding.

While the rain warning is currently localised to Co Cork, Met Éireann is predicting heavy downpours across most of the country.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather says next week will follow a similar theme of dull and wet conditions

"There has certainly been a cooler feel to the weather and that will continue for a couple of days," Mr O'Reilly said.

"Unfortunately, rain is moving up from the southwest today and it will turn very wet this evening for many areas.

"A very showery day tomorrow and then a bit of a respite on Monday but unfortunately more unsettled, showery weather for the coming days next week.

However, as we approache the end of next week, Mr O'Reilly says we may have a bit of a reprieve in conditions.

"The meteorlogial season of summer doesn't start until June 1 and some of the weather models are showing a chance that high pressure could come towards us for the bank holiday weekend," Mr O'Reilly said.

"So if you're late in the fire and wondering where summary is it hasn't started yet but it might just come for the bank holiday weekend fingers crossed."
