The recruitment drive for the Defence Forces is being ratcheted up, with the navy coming ashore this weekend with a ship open to the public in Cork City.

A display of career options will also be held at a ‘pop up tent’ in the popular nearby Marina Market.

Meanwhile, the Air Corps has taken to the online airwaves, via Webinar, into classrooms looking for future pilots a la Top Gun.

The Naval Service will host a recruitment drive on May 4 and on board one of its vessels, LÉ George Bernard Shaw, which will be anchored at Kennedy Quay in Cork City.

A navy spokesman said the two days will provide people with the opportunity to engage with serving personnel.

They will be on hand to explain careers in the seaborne force and the various different recruitment pathways in the forces such as ‘General Service Recruitment, Cadetships, Tech Trainees Schemes (trade qualifications), Direct Entry Recruitment and Naval Service Reserve (NSR) Recruitment'.

“This recruitment drive will also provide opportunities to engage with navy personnel in relation to professional military education possibilities and their continuous professional development courses such as service in the Naval Service Diving Section (NSDS) or Naval Service Reserve,” the navy spokesman said.

While the seaborne service is looking for personnel, the Defence Forces ‘eyes in the sky’ are also on the lookout for aspiring ‘Top Gun’ pilots.

The Air Corps is currently broadcasting “a live recruitment pathway webinar” to more than 45 schools reaching more than 3,000 students.

The series include cadetships (for officers), and General Service Recruitment and Technical (TMAST) careers for enlisted personnel.
