Fresh appeal for information into mysterious disappearance of Cork couple Conor and Sheila Dwyer

Conor and Sheila Dwyer, who were both in their early 60s, were last seen on April 30, 1991 near their home in Chapel Hill, Fermoy.

Gardaí have launched a fresh appeal for information on a missing Cork couple which has become one of Ireland's most puzzling missing persons cases.

Conor and Sheila Dwyer, who were both in their early 60s, were last seen on April 30, 1991 near their home in Chapel Hill, Fermoy.

The Dwyers were well-known in the Fermoy area and were described as a nicely dressed, polite couple who were well-liked.

The couple, who were “quiet people who kept to themselves”, were often recognised by their distinctive car, a white 1978/79 Toyota Cressida with the registration 5797ZT.

There has been no trace of this car found since the couple went missing.

A phone call made to Sheila’s sister the day after they were last seen was the last time anyone heard from the couple.

The case is set to feature on Crimecall on Monday, where gardaí from Cork will explore the mystery of their disappearance.

Conor was 62 at the time of their disappearance, while Sheila was a year younger.

Anyone with information on the Dwyers or their Toyota Cressida car is asked to come forward and help bring some closure to the Dwyer family.

Retired chief superintendent Kieran McGann said the case "remains a mystery to the community". He hopes that the fresh appeal will help bring “some closure to the family”.

Peter Massey, a former colleague of Mr Dwyer, said he was a “kind, gentle and honest man” and the couple were “just nice people to be around.”

He recalls receiving a phone call from Sheila’s sister in May 1991 asking: “Have you had any contact with Conor or Sheila?...we haven’t heard from them.”

Gardaí working on the case believe the decades-long mystery can be solved.

Anyone with information on the Dwyers or their Toyota Cressida car is asked to come forward and help bring some closure to the family.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimecall on 1800 40 50 60 or Fermoy Garda Station on 025 82100.
