Garda used a stinger device to stop a car which had fled from a checkpoint and smashed into a garda car and a number of other cars in Cork this morning.

A man in his 40s has been arrested following the incident.

Gardaí tried to stop the car he was in which he was travelling in the Faggot Hill area. However, it then took off from the area towards Cork City.

The car collided with a Garda vehicle and a number of other stationary cars before it was finally brought to a stop on Thomas Davis Street in Blackpool.

No injuries have been reported.

The man is currently being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in Cork City.

Thomas Davis Street remains closed, with local diversions are in place.

"Investigations are ongoing," a Garda spokesperson said.
