A Garda investigation has been launched in county Cork on Tuesday after a man was found dead, lying in a pool of blood, in a house in Macroom.

The man, 61, was found with apparent head injuries lying in the kitchen of a house in Annville at around lunchtime. The house is in a sheltered housing development at Barrett's Place, in the town centre.

The scene has been sealed off for an inspection by Garda forensic technical experts.

Gardaí have begun door-to-door enquiries, and have also begun harvesting CCTV footage from the area in a bid to determine the man's last known movements and who he may have been associating with.

In a statement, gardaí said they are "investigating all the circumstances following the discovery" of the man’s body.

The local Coroner has also been notified and the services of the office of the assistant state pathologist have also been requested.

It is expected that assistant state pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster will conduct a primary investigation of the remains at scene before they are removed to hospital, where a post-mortem will take place.

The circumstances of the man's death are officially being treated as suspicious this afternoon.

It is hoped that the autopsy will be able to determine how the man suffered the head injuries, and when he died.

The results of the autopsy will determine the course of the Garda investigation.

Gardaí have asked that anyone with information that can assist them with the investigation is asked to contact Macroom Garda Station on 026 20590, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
