Gardaí are making enquiries after a hoax threat was made against a school in East Cork.

Armed detectives, frontline gardaí and the Armed Support Unit attended the scene at St Coleman's Community College in Midleton.

Gardaí said a "report of a threat made via email" towards the school was made on Tuesday morning.

A cordon was established in the surrounding area and gardaí said that the area was canvassed.

Gardaí said that following this, the threat was deemed a hoax and the area was declared safe.

It is unclear what the nature of the threat was.

A spokesperson for Cork Education and Training Board told the  Irish Examiner that the "matter was dealt with in line with appropriate protocols to ensure the safety of all those attending the school".

"An Garda Síochána responded to the incident and were present at the school today.

"Following an assessment by An Garda Síochána, in conjunction with the school authorities, it was deemed that there was no risk to the health and safety of anyone in the school community and the school continued for the remainder of the day," the spokesperson added.

Parents were also contacted by school management to inform them of the incident to reassure them of the safety of their children.

Enquiries are ongoing, gardaí added in a statement.
