Man threatened Cork shop worker 'Open the till or I’m going to stick this in your neck,' court told

“Open the till or I’m going to stick this in your neck,” was the threat allegedly made during the robbery of a shop in Cork City earlier this month and on Monday the accused man agreed to a four-week remand in custody.

Darren Rice consented to the application to remand him in custody until October 19. Sergeant Gearóid Davis said formal directions would be sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions on the robbery charge. 

Without his consent he could not be remanded in custody for any longer than a fortnight at a time. Judge David Waters adjourned the case where he refused jurisdiction last week at Cork District Court.

Detective Garda Orla Moriarty charged 36-year-old Darren Rice of no fixed address with carrying out a robbery at Spar, Sullivan’s Quay, Cork, on Saturday, September 12. 

The detective was about to get into the witness box to give evidence in her objection to bail being granted to the accused, but Darren Rice indicated that he was not making a bail application.

Sergeant John Dineen then gave a brief summary of the allegations that a man entered Spar on Sullivan’s Quay just after noon on Saturday, ordered the member of staff to open the till or he would “stick this in your neck” while showing her a knife concealed in the sleeve of his jacket, putting her in fear.
