Cork man accused of murdering Ukrainian father remanded in custody

Book of evidence is being prepared following the fatal stabbing of Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi in Cork city in March

A Cork man accused of murdering a young Ukrainian father in Cork city in March has been remanded in custody until July 15.

Jonathan Hennessy, 42, of 15 Dr Patrick O'Sullivan Terrace, Upper Aghada, Co Cork, is charged by Detective Garda Kevin Motherway with the murder of Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi.

The charge states that, on March 16, 2026, at Knapp’s Square, Cork city, within the District Court district of Cork City, he allegedly murdered Mr Zhyvytskyi, contrary to common law.

Sergeant John Dineen previously told the court it is alleged that Mr Zhyvytskyi sustained a stab wound to the chest during an altercation at Knapp’s Square at approximately 7.50pm on March 16.

The court previously heard he made his way home before collapsing. His death was formally pronounced at 8.35pm that evening.

Mr Zhyvytskyi, a father of one in his early 30s, was reportedly stabbed just metres from his home at Camden Court apartments on Carroll's Quay after going out to buy food nearby. 

He managed to return to his apartment, where his partner called the emergency services. Despite efforts by paramedics to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Gardaí immediately launched a murder investigation.

Judge David Waters remanded Jonathan Hennessy in continuing custody, on the application of Sergeant Gearóid Davis for preparation and service of the book of evidence.
