Man arrested after woman, 40s, dies following assault at Waterford city house
Gardaí have arrested a man in his 40s after a woman was fatally assaulted in Waterford.
A woman has died following an incident at a house in Waterford city this evening.
A man has been arrested for questioning as part of the investigation into how she sustained the injuries.
The woman was rushed to University Hospital Waterford after being found with serious injuries at a property in Grange Heights housing estate in the city after 6pm. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
The woman was in her 40s.
In a statement on Monday night, gardaí said: “Gardaí in Waterford are investigating a fatal assault which occurred in Grange Heights, Waterford city, this evening, Monday 27th April 2026.
"Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident at a domestic residence at approximately 6:15pm.”
Gardaí said that the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.
The statement added: “A man (40s) was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at a Garda station in the Waterford Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
"The scene is currently preserved for technical examination. A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation. An incident room has been established at Waterford Garda station. A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased.”
Gardaí appealed for witnesses to come forward: “Anyone who was in the Grange Heights area on Monday, 27th of April 2026 between 6pm and 6.30pm who may have camera footage, including CCTV or dashcam, is asked to provide this footage to investigating Gardaí.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
Investigations are ongoing.”
