Man arrested as 65-year-old woman dies after assault in Galway

A woman in her 60s has died after following what gardaí described as a "serious assault incident" in Galway on Friday.
Gardaí were alerted to the assault at a residential property in Ballybrit at approximately 11.45pm on Friday night.
A 65-year-old woman was later brought from the scene to University Hospital Galway with serious injuries. On Sunday morning, gardaí confirmed that the woman had died in hospital early hours of Saturday morning.
A garda spokesperson told the that a post-mortem examination on the deceased has taken place and the results are "not being disclosed for operational reasons".
The scene remains preserved and is continuing to being examined by the Garda Technical Bureau.
A man in his 30s has since been arrested in connection with the incident. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the North Western Region.
"Investigations are ongoing," the spokesperson said.
