A motorcycle enthusiast suffered a fatal tear to one of his main arteries after falling off his bike at a motocross track in Kildare almost two years ago, an inquest has heard.

Brian Anderson, aged 41, of Ardattin, Carlow, died in the intensive care unit in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, on July 2, 2024 — six days after he was injured while practising at a motocross track in Calverstown, Kildare.

Mr Anderson, a former student of the National College of Art and Design who was full-time carer to his mother Judy, was rushed by ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital before later being transferred to Beaumont Hospital for surgery.

The deceased’s sister, Laura Anderson, gave evidence at a sitting of Dublin District Coroner’s Court of formally identifying her brother’s body to gardaí.

Coroner Cróna Gallagher said the results of an autopsy on Mr Anderson’s body showed he suffered a “traumatic carotid artery dissection due to a motocross incident.”

Inspector Declan O’Sullivan applied for a six-month adjournment of the hearing under Section 25 (1) of the Coroners Act on the basis that criminal proceedings are being considered.

Insp O’Sullivan said a garda file on the case had been completed, adding that it was due to be forwarded to the DPP. Dr Gallagher granted the application to await directions from the DPP, and she listed the inquest for further mention on August 25.

Mr Anderson’s death was the second tragedy to befall his family as his late father, 66-year-old Willie, was killed in a road traffic collision in October 2020 while riding a motorcycle.
