Court told gardaí were objecting to bail for the accused, but there was no application for bail at that stage.

The alleged seizure of cannabis with a total street value of €610,000 at The Glen in Cork City last Thursday saw a 31-year-old man remanded in custody for four weeks on Tuesday.

Derek Kavanagh, of 69 Arderrin Way, The Glen, Cork, appeared at a special sitting of Mallow District Court at the weekend and appeared today at Cork District Court by video link from prison.

His solicitor Frank Buttimer said there was no application for bail at the moment and there was consent to a remand in custody for four weeks.

Sergeant John Dineen said DPP directions were awaited. Judge Catherine Ryan remanded him in custody until February 24.

Derek Kavanagh is charged in relation to the alleged seizure of €610,000 worth of cannabis in a search in Cork that followed the search of property connected to another man who was also brought before Mallow District Court last weekend.

Derek Kavanagh was charged by Detective Garda Rory Fogarty with possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis for sale or supply at Arderrin Way, The Glen, Cork, on January 22.

Det Garda Fogarty of the Cork City Divisional Drugs Squad gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court Mr Kavanagh made no reply to either charge after caution.

He said gardaí were objecting to bail for Mr Kavanagh, but there was no application for bail at that stage.

Det Garda Fogarty said gardaí had not yet received DPP’s directions, but he confirmed the value of the drugs was €610,000 and he expected the matter to be dealt with on indictment.
