Cannabis plants worth more than €2m have been seized by gardaí following search operations in Co Westmeath.

The searches took place on Wednesday under warrant at two properties in the Ballynagore area.

Gardaí uncovered what they described as sophisticated growhouse operations during the searches, seizing cannabis plants worth approximately €500,000 and cannabis herb valued at an estimated €1.75m.

The operation formed part of Operation Tara, an ongoing investigation targeting the sale and supply of drugs nationwide.

Gardaí have preserved both scenes for technical examination.
