A 68-year-old man from Cavan charged with having €23,000 worth of heroin at Kent train station in Cork last year confessed to the crime on Wednesday.

Detective Garda Jeremy Murphy served a book of evidence on John Boyle of 39 Barrack Hill, Belturbet, County Cavan, at Cork District Court last week.

Today at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, John Boyle pleaded guilty to the most serious charge against him.

He admitted having Diamorphine (heroin) for sale or supply at a time when its street value exceeded €13,000 – a count that can carry a 10-year minimum sentence unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Judge Helen Boyle presided over the case against John Boyle which was prosecuted by Emmet Boyle, barrister, and she remarked that it should be pointed out that none of the parties were related to each other.

On the application of defence barrister Mahon Corkery, Judge Boyle extended free legal aid for a GP report on the accused.

Sentencing was adjourned until November 12 with the accused remanded on bail until that date on the same conditions, including a requirement to live at the Belturbet address, sign on each Monday at Cavan garda station and stay out of Cork except for court appearances.

Over €23,000 worth of heroin was seized at Kent train station on April 25, 2024. He was also charged with money-laundering in respect of over €700 cash on the same date.
