A young woman who threw glasses at passersby and carved names into a wooden counter at a hotel was given a total sentence of four months and a further six-month suspended sentence for a series of offences.

Judge Mary Dorgan wished 31-year-old Aisling Murphy, of no fixed address, success in her continued rehabilitation and noted that she was now much better after being in custody since November 2024. The judge expressed the view that the young woman would be out of jail in a couple of weeks and that the suspended sentence over her on her release would be an incentive.

Judge Dorgan finalised the case with the assistance of a medical report, a probation report, and a prison governor’s report on the accused.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said that on November 4 at Clayton hotel, Lapp’s Quay, Cork, she caused damage at the coffee dock. She attempted to plate up breakfast items and then she carved “Aisling Charlie” into the wood with a fork and left, causing €200 damage.

Shane Collins Daly solicitor said the defendant was pleading guilty to a range of offences against her. He said she was doing very well in prison and was responding to medication very favourably.

“She was quite unwell when she first came to court. She was quite distressed. Back on November 4 she was not well enough to make bail. Worryingly, around this time something went badly wrong with her mental health. The charges against her were getting progressively worse. She was getting more difficult and her behaviour was out of control,” Mr Collins Daly said.

On September 4, Aisling Murphy was at Henry Street, Cork, near Mercy University hospital, where she kept pacing up and down the road where there was oncoming traffic. And when gardaĂ tried to help her she verbally abused them On the same day, at Henry Street again, she was verbally abusive to staff at Mercy University Hospital. GardaĂ told her to leave but she remained in the area. She roared at gardaĂ to 'fuck off'.

In another incident that occured one week later in the city, she swore at gardaĂ on numerous occasions.

On October 18, at South Mall outside the Imperial hotel, she walked out in front of traffic and was drunk to the extent that she was a danger to herself or others.

On October 21, at Penney’s on St Patrick’s Street, while items were being rung up on the till she placed €45 worth of items into a bag and walked away without paying.

On the same date she was abusive to staff at City Hall and to gardaĂ.

Also that day she was at Carey’s Lane, throwing pint glasses at people passing outside the Weatherspoon’s pub.

On October 27, at the same premises, she picked up a chair, damaged the chair, a picture on a wall, and drinking glasses.

On October 29, she pulled a CCTV camera off a wall at Focus Ireland on Grand Parade.

And then there was the incident at the Clayton hotel in November 2024.
