Judge Helen Boyle told the guilty man: 'I accept you were struck yourself six times in the face and head, and you were not the one who struck the first blow. The injured party, in fact, struck you the first blow.'

A man who was surrounded and assaulted during a violent incident in Cork city centre was able to punch one of his assailants nine times into the face, and kick him three times in the head.

This man, Shane Purcell, aged 27,  of St Vincent’s Hostel, was found guilty by a jury that, on May 23, 2021, he assaulted the other man causing him harm.
