A man accused of murdering chef Ian Baitson in Cobh, Co Cork, last March has been sent forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court.

Dylan Scannell, 30, has been charged with the murder of Mr Baitson, a 33-year-old father of two, who suffered serious injuries during an incident in a car park in Cobh on March 15 and died four days later in hospital.

Scannell, with an address at O’Rahilly Street, Cobh, Co Cork, was remanded in Cork Prison until his trial by Judge Colm Roberts in Midleton District Court.

Scannell was also charged that on March 15, at Eurospar car park, Newtown Rd, Cobh, he produced a long-bladed sword, an article capable of inflicting serious injury, in the course of a dispute and in a manner likely to unlawfully intimidate another person. This was contrary to Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act of 1990.

The sword was allegedly produced while committing an alleged offence, named on the charge sheet as murder.

A third charge states that on an unknown date between August 2023 and March 2024 at an unknown location within the district court area of Midleton, he engaged in transferring, handling, possessing and using property — namely cash — that is in the proceeds of criminal conduct while knowing whether or not that property was the proceeds of criminal conduct.

This alleged offence is contrary to Section 7(1) (a) (ii), 7 (1) (b) and 7(3) of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010.
