Gardaí found smiling Cork man virtually naked in jail cell after setting fire to it

The court heard that Anthony West urinated on the cell door of a second cell which seeped into the corridor outside

Gardaí went to check on a prisoner in a garda station cell and found that he had set fire to it and was lying on the mattress smiling and naked but for a T-shirt around his waist.

Sergeant John Kelleher said the accused carved the word, Tony, into the wall with a ring which gardaí were unable to remove from his finger because of his violent resistance.
