A shop worker at The Wine Buff store on Oliver Plunkett Street approached a woman leaving without paying for two bottles of wine and the culprit kicked her in the leg and threatened to break one of the bottles over her head.

Judge Mary Dorgan imposed a six-month jail term on Margaret Deasy for this assault at Cork District Court.

35-year-old Margaret Deasy, of Cork Simon Community, was arrested and charged with assault by Garda Patrick Houlihan, who also charged her with another assault on a shop worker in another premises and counts of shoplifting on the afternoon of April 3.

Garda Patrick Houlihan said at an earlier court hearing that on April 3, Margaret Deasy went into Benetton shop on Oliver Plunkett Street and selected a woman’s gilet jacket worth €70 and left the premises without offering payment. She was followed by security who asked for it back but she refused and kept on walking.

“She entered Diesel on Oliver Plunkett Street and stole clothing to the value of €73.

“She entered The Wine Buff on Oliver Plunkett Street and stole a bottle of wine valued €44.99 and while leaving she kicked the staff member in the leg.”

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said Ms Deasy picked up another bottle and threatened to strike the member of staff over the head with it.

In another incident, she entered Penneys and stole €40 worth of clothing.

There was further evidence that she spat at a security guard in Marks & Spencer when confronted.
