A 66-year-old former soldier charged with the murder of an 84-year-old man at his home in Castlemaine, Co Kerry in February has been remanded on bail.

Surety totalling €27,000 was lodged in the District Court in Tralee.

Among other terms of bail were that Thomas Carroll surrender all firearms in his possession and his passport.

Mr Carroll of Brookway, Clonmel, Co Tipperary is charged that he did murder Patrick O’Mahony at Ballyraemeen, Castlemaine, on February 24 last. The charge is contrary to common law.

Admission to bail on a number of terms was granted in the High Court last Thursday.

This included independent surety of €20,000 along with his own bond of €7,000 being lodged in the District Court.

In an undertaking to the court in Tralee, Mr Carroll said he would abide by all conditions. He understood his obligations, he replied to his solicitor Pat Mann.

The terms set down by the High Court include that Mr Carroll will not commit any offence and be of good behaviour; reside at his address at 25 Brookway, Clonmel, Co Tipperary and report daily at Clonmel Garda Station between the hours of 9am and 7pm. 

He is also to remain indoors and maintain a curfew between the hours of 8pm and 8am and carry a mobile phone at all times and this is to be charged at all times so as to answer gardaí.

Judge David Waters remanded him on bail on these conditions to appear at Tralee District Court on April 17 for service of the Book of Evidence.

His attendance will be excused if the book is not ready on that date.
