A young Carrigaline man who was asked for drugs by two strangers was attacked by them when he said he had none, it was alleged in a case against one young man at Cork District Court.

Jamie O’Byrne, aged 32, of 4 Pearse Road, Ballyphehane, Cork, faces a charge of assault causing harm arising out of the alleged attack.

Sergeant John Kelleher gave an outline of the allegations against the accused to see if Judge Mary Dorgan would accept jurisdiction for the case.

“On August 10, 2022, at Weston View, Carrigaline, a young man was approached by two unknown males who asked did he have drugs, and when he said, no, he was assaulted. He received punches to the face and was knocked to the ground.

“He managed to run for safety to a nearby house. He had a cut lip and bruised elbow and was shaken by the incident.

“Jamie O’Byrne and another man were seen by gardaí in the area. Mr O’Byrne had blood on his knuckles and he told gardaí he had been in a fight,” Sgt Kelleher said.

After hearing this outline of the allegations, Judge Dorgan accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case at Cork District Court.

The case was then adjourned until February 28 for all of the prosecution statements in the case to be sent to Frank Buttimer, solicitor for the defendant.

Directions are awaited in another case faced by the same defendant. He is charged with entering part of a building at Ashgrove Drive, Carrigaline, belonging to another person, and carrying out a theft there between August 20 and 28 in 2022.

That case was also adjourned to February 28.
