Man jailed for burgling Cork city pub twice in one night

The defendant was found walking down the street near the scene after the second burglary carrying a cash register containing €500 and two bottles of whiskey

A Cork city pub was burgled twice in one night by the same man and now the culprit has been jailed for 10 months.

38-year-old Eddie Keenan of 21 John’s Square, Blackpool, Cork, was found walking down the street near the scene after the second burglary carrying a cash register containing €500 and two glass bottles of whiskey from the pub.

The unfortunate pub was Quinlan’s Bar on Watercourse Road, Cork. Detective Garda Brian Holland testified that the two burglaries were carried out within less than three hours of each other on September 9 at Quinlan’s Bar.

At 4.10am, he entered as a trespasser by forcing open the side emergency exit. He stole two bottles of alcoholic spirits from behind the bar and left through the emergency exit. The owner attended a short time later and secured the door.

At 6.50am, Eddie Keenan entered as a trespasser and forced open the emergency exit again. He stole a till containing €500 in cash and two bottles of whiskey from behind the bar and left through emergency exit.

Eddie Keenan exited on to Watercourse Road and walked up O’Connell Street, carrying the till and two glass bottles of alcohol. CCTV captured him committing the burglaries.

Shane Collins-Daly, defence solicitor, said the accused did not apply for bail since his arrest on the day of the offences.

“He needs to deal with his issues. He is hoping to get into treatment when he gets out of prison. He is doing everything he can in prison to help him when he gets out,” Mr Collins-Daly said.

Judge Olann Kelleher said: “I don’t know why he thought there would be no CCTV in a public bar nowadays.” The judge sentenced him to a total of 10 months in prison.
