A man, 50s, has died following a serious road traffic collision in Co Mayo, with gardaí appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The incident, involving a vehicle and bicycle, happened shortly outside Ballinrobe on the N84 at Carrowkeel after 9pm on Wednesday.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene, where the cyclist, a man aged in his 50s, was found to have sustained serious injuries.

The man was taken to University College Hospital, Galway where he was later pronounced dead.

The scene remains preserved for forensic examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road is currently closed with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

Road users with camera footage, including dash-cam footage, from the N84 at Carrowkeel around 9pm on Wednesday are also asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said that investigations are ongoing.
