Gardaí are awaiting autopsy results to determine the direction of their investigation into the death of a woman in Cavan town on Tuesday morning.

The woman’s body was found in an apartment on James Connolly St.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí and ambulance crew were called to the property in the early hours of the morning.

The area was sealed off pending the arrival of a State pathologist.

A statement issued by Garda HQ said: “Gardaí are investigating the death of a woman in her 50s who was found unresponsive at a residential property on Connolly St, Cavan, shortly after 2am on April 7.

“Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the scene, where the woman was pronounced dead.”

It said that the Office of the State Pathologist was notified, and that an autopsy will be arranged.

“The results of the post-mortem will assist gardaí in determining the direction of their investigation,” it said.

The autopsy is expected to take place at Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan on Wednesday.

It will examine if any injuries were suffered by the victim and may suggest what could have caused them. Blood tests will also be taken to check for the presence of any substances that could have been a factor in the death.

Gardaí have conducted preliminary inquiries to establish whether  anyone lived at the apartment with the woman and have spoken to the person who raised the alarm.
