Gardaí urge iPhone users to update software amid 'DarkSword' phone virus concerns

Gardaí are urging Apple device users to update their software amid concerns of a new virus.

The malware 'Darksword' was discovered by researchers earlier this month, and it has the capability of penetrating and stealing information from potentially hundreds of millions of Apple iPhones.

It was found on dozens of websites in Ukraine in recent weeks, and the discovery marks the second time this month that researchers have found spyware targeting iPhones and other Apple devices.

Gardaí have said that if users find themselves victims of a malware attack, they should consult a competent cybersecurity consultant and report the crime to their local Garda station.

The warning states that 'Darksword' targets any Apple device running iOS versions 18.4 to 18.7 and allows attackers to access content, messages, contacts and credentials stored on their phone.

"Users don't receive any notification that the device has been compromised as the malware works silently in the background with no effect on the phone's operation," gardaí said.

Users are being urged to update their devices to iOS 26.3.1 or 18.7.6 to fully protect their phones.

Another option that can be taken is using lockdown mode, which can be found in the settings.

This will give stronger protection, but may limit some functionality of the phone.
