Pedestrian and motorist killed in separate road collisions

Two people died on Irish roads in separate incidents on Wednesday.

A man in his 30s died following a single-vehicle collision in Co Monaghan yesterday evening.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the incident on the R187 between Monaghan and Rosslea, at Inishammon, Smithboro, at around 7.30pm. 

The sole occupant of the car, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

His body has since been transferred to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, where an autopsy will take place in due course. 

The coroner has since been notified. 

The road remains closed for gardaí to carry out a technical examination of the scene. 

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R187 at Inishammon, Co. Monaghan, on Wednesday January 28 2026 between 7.15pm and 8.15pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

Pedestrian (70s) killed in Laois

Meanwhile, a pedestrian has died in a separate collision involving a car in Co Laois on Wednesday evening. 

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the incident on Main Street, Abbeyleix, at around 7pm. 

The pedestrian, a man in his 70s, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, where he was later pronounced dead. 

The road was closed for gardaí to carry out a technical examination of the scene. It has since reopened. 

"No other injuries have been reported," a garda spokesperson said. 

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 6.30pm and 7.30pm yesterday evening are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
