There has been a wet start to the week across much of the country, and Met Éireann has warned conditions will remain unsettled for much of the week.

A status yellow rain warning has been issued for three counties, with the forecaster warning that heavy downpours may cause flooding.

The warning for Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow will come into effect at midnight on Tuesday and remain in place until 6pm.

Heavy rain may lead to localised flooding and difficult travel conditions.

Monday will be dull and wet, with widespread rain persisting through the afternoon and turning heavy at times before gradually clearing eastwards. Breezy conditions will develop, with strong winds and gusts along Atlantic coasts.

Rain will linger this evening across eastern and northwestern counties, while clearer and drier conditions develop elsewhere as rain clears. Frost and ice will form overnight, with lows of -2C to 1C.

The week ahead

Tuesday will bring cold and crisp conditions, with frost, icy patches and some early sunshine in the west. Elsewhere, wet and windy weather will dominate through the morning and afternoon.

Rain will turn heavy at times and may become wintry, with snow most likely on higher ground. Daytime temperatures of 2C to 7C are expected, though it will feel “extra chilly” due to brisk or cyclonic winds.

Rain will continue into Tuesday night, with snow largely confined to higher ground and lows of -1C to 3C.

Wednesday will bring further rain and drizzle, along with patches of mist and fog. As rain clears later in the day, drier spells may develop across southern counties.
