Irish skier dies following Alps avalanche

An Irish man in his 50s has died following an avalanche in the Swiss Alps.

Swiss police said three skiers had been caught up in the avalanche in an area near Ovronnaz in the Valais part of Switzerland on January 13.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident and they located the man's avalanche transceiver.

The man was recovered from the snow, resuscitated, and airlifted to hospital in Sion.

However, Swiss police said he died on Tuesday night.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.
