A 59-year-old woman has died and her husband remains seriously injured in hospital after being attacked outside their home in Ballinlough in Cork last night.

The couple were stabbed outside their home in Shrewsbury Downs on the south side of the city at around 9.30pm on Monday.

A man in his 20s, who is known to the couple, was arrested at the scene.

Neighbours contacted emergency services after witnessing the incident outside the property.

Members of the Armed Support Unit responded to the scene. Paramedics performed CPR on the injured man, and the couple were rushed to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

The woman, aged 59, subsequently died in hospital. Her husband, aged in his early 60s, remains seriously injured and has undergone emergency surgery.

The younger man was taken to a garda station in Cork for questioning.

He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and was scheduled to be seen by a doctor on Sunday evening.

It is understood that gardaí need to ascertain whether the man is medically fit to be questioned at this time.

The scene has been cordoned off, and a full forensic examination of the area is expected to take place today.

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that members of An Garda Síochána "responded to a serious incident at a location in Ballinlough, Cork City, this evening, Monday 17th November 2025".

"We are aware that a number of people have been conveyed to hospital," the spokesperson said.

"As this is in its early stages we are not in a position to provide any further information at this time".
