Stripe to partner with Irish Maths Trust to secure olympiad's future
Stripe’s three-year sponsorship commitment to the Irish Maths Trust will also allow it to significantly expand the number of programmes it offers nationally.
There is set to be a major boost for advanced maths tuition for talented secondary school students next year as the Collison brothers-led Stripe partners with the Irish Maths Trust.
The charitable organisation, made up of more than 80 mathematicians from across Ireland, is behind the Irish Maths Olympiad (IrMO), the national competition for secondary school students focused on challenging mathematics.
Stripe’s funding to the Irish Maths Trust will secure the future of the competition, which is also described as “the gateway” for top-performing students to represent the country in the International Maths Olympiad.
The sponsorship by the financial services company follows Ireland’s best-ever performance in the 2025 International Maths Olympiad, which saw the team take home two silvers and a bronze.
Stripe’s three-year sponsorship commitment to the Irish Maths Trust will also allow it to significantly expand the number of programmes it offers nationally.
Through the sponsorship, seven new junior maths enrichment (JME) centres, where the trust offers free weekly classes for secondary school students, will be established across Ireland.
It currently offers such centres in Cork and Dublin. The new centres will be based in Waterford (SETU), Tralee (MTU), Thurles (MIC), Galway (University of Galway), Maynooth (Maynooth University), Sligo (ATU), and Letterkenny (ATU).
Stripe’s sponsorship will also fund training camps scheduled for next year to provide specialised preparation for the Irish Maths Olympiad squad as they compete internationally.
“We're thrilled that, with Stripe's support, we'll be able to share the joy of challenging mathematics with the next generation all across the country,” said Neil Dobbs, a lecturer in mathematics at University College Dublin.
“The new JME centres will change Ireland's mathematical landscape for years to come. Together with the training camps, we'll see improved performance at International Maths Olympiads and more students achieving great things in Stem [science, technology, engineering, and mathematics].”
The Irish Maths Trust has “quietly nurtured” extraordinary talent for years, said Stripe chief revenue officer Eileen O’Mara.
"Ireland's recent success in global competition demonstrates what's possible with proper support. We're proud to ensure this vital programme can continue and expand its reach to every corner of Ireland.”
Stripe’s sponsorship comes alongside other high profile sponsorships as it aims to “accelerate scientific and technological progress in Ireland”.
Stripe has become the title sponsor of the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (YSTE), taking over from previous title sponsor BT, 20 years after its co-founders Patrick and John Collison competed at the annual schools’ competition.
Patrick was crowned the overall winner, while John took home a category award. Stipe has also backed youth accelerator Patch and the University of Limerick's immersive software engineering course.
